L'Arbitre

L'Arbitre is a French word that means

• referee,
• arbitrator or
• judge

The word originates from the Latin word arbiter and has the following two definitions:

• he who hears and decides a case, a judge, umpire, mediator
• one chosen by two disputing parties to decide the matter

The referee on the football pitch serves in this role to adjudicate between 22 players on the pitch, at least a dozen more on the touchline and at times, hundreds and thousands of fans in the stands.
